Supporting an animal
In order to buy an animal a person must attend the market sale held on the Friday of the Northwest Washington Fair at 1:00 pm. There are two ways to support an animal.
You may look at this handout for a summary. Purchasing an animal.pdf
1. Bidding: like a true auction, the highest bid based on a price per pound is sold by the professional auctioneers. You will be required to complete a bidder card and may obtain a number prior to the auction which will help us tremendously with the billing and bookkeeping. The buyer also must decide whether to "take-out" or "turn".
Take-out: you take the animal home or decide which meat-processing facility you would like to take the animal to. You will be responsible for taking it to anyone besides Lynden Meats or Keizer. Arrangements can be made with the committee, ag teacher, or 4-H leader of the student you supported. You will pay cutting and wrapping, butchering, smoking, and curing.
Turn: when you turn an animal, the committee takes the floor price off of your bill (i.e. $.50 per pound but changes weekly with current market prices). The floor price is determined the day or two before the sale and is published in the program. The remainder is billed to you for support. You do not get the animal, however you are recorded as the buyer and your support goes to the student. The animal ends up with the person who turned all of the animals and often ends up in the food supply for the nation. If you bid $1.75 a pound and the floor price is $.55/lb you would pay $1.20
You will receive a free admission ticket to the following year's fair and a coupon for food at one of the school PTA booths regardless of the method you use to bid.
2. Adding on: this is a flat dollar amount or price per pound added on to the student's check. Add on supporters will be announced in 2010. You must complete an add-on card with the amount, student, and your name and address for billing. Students will still send thank yous and some provide certificates with a picture of the student and animal. Add on cards are to be used to sponsor single or multiple students on one easy to use form. Add on cards should be sent to Tanya Dostal 3202 Behme Rd. Custer, WA 98240 or email the add on card to Tanya Dostal
Individuals or businesses that add on must make payment through the livestock committee, not the student. Checks made payable to Lynden Jr. Livestock Show and Sale or LJLSS.
